Hi there — I’m Tayna Chessman, the founder of SoCal Doulas.
Before anything else, I want to be transparent about something: SoCal Doulas isn’t a big corporation. It actually started with just one doula — me — trying to build a sustainable way to support families while still having a life.
A Note From Tayna
Like many doulas, I spent years juggling on-call life, trying to market myself, figuring out billing, and doing all the behind-the-scenes work that comes with running a doula practice. Over time, I began building systems and relationships that made things easier — especially when it came to insurance billing, referrals, and administrative support.
Eventually, I realized something important: a lot of doulas are locked out of opportunities because the systems are complicated or closed off. Insurance programs, referral networks, and administrative infrastructure can be difficult to access when you’re working alone.
So instead of keeping those resources to myself, I decided to open the door and share them.
That’s how SoCal Doulas grew — not as a corporation, but as a community of doulas working together so we can all build sustainable careers while supporting families well.
If that sounds like something you’d like to be part of, I’d love to connect.
Labor Doula Opportunities
Labor doulas working with SoCal Doulas receive $1,300 per completed birth client.
Each birth support package typically includes:
• Two prenatal visits (in-person or virtual)
• Continuous labor and birth support
• One in-person postpartum visit
While we cannot guarantee a specific number of clients each month, our goal is to keep doulas actively supporting families. Many of our doulas attend approximately 3–4 births per month, depending on availability.
Typical Earnings for Labor Doulas
Based on current client demand and participation levels, SoCal Doulas birth doulas are currently earning approximately $62,000 to $73,500 per year.
These estimates are based on doulas attending an average of 3–4 births per month at $1,300 per birth client.
Actual earnings will vary depending on availability and scheduling preferences, but our goal is to help doulas maintain a steady flow of meaningful work while building a sustainable income.
Access to Insurance Clients
One of the biggest barriers doulas face is navigating insurance billing.
At SoCal Doulas, we’ve already built the infrastructure to make that possible.
Our team handles:
• Insurance billing and claims submission
• Benefits verification and authorization
• Client onboarding and scheduling coordination
• Secure documentation and recordkeeping for 10+ years
This allows doulas to work with families whose care may be covered by insurance, without having to manage the complicated administrative side themselves.
Bring Your Own Clients
We also believe doulas should have the freedom to grow their own practices.
If you bring your own private clients, you can bill those services through our insurance system.
We simply charge a 10% administrative fee to cover billing, claims management, and long-term documentation requirements.
This allows you to offer insurance billing to your own clients while we handle the heavy lifting behind the scenes.
Postpartum Doula Opportunities
We also support families during the postpartum period.
Postpartum doulas working with SoCal Doulas are employees and are compensated $25–$29 per hour based on experience and certification.
Postpartum support may include:
• Daytime postpartum visits
• Overnight newborn care
• Parent education and support
• Light household assistance related to baby care
Schedules vary depending on family needs and doula availability.
Who We’re Looking For
We welcome doulas from a variety of training backgrounds, though ProDoula certification is preferred.
Our ideal team members are:
• Compassionate and supportive with families
• Reliable and professional in birth settings
• Comfortable collaborating with healthcare providers
• Organized and responsive with communication
• Committed to supporting families without judgment
Let’s Work Together
If you’re reading this and thinking “this actually sounds helpful,” then I’d love to hear from you.
SoCal Doulas was built on the idea that we don’t have to do this work alone. If we share resources, support each other, and build systems together, everyone doulas and families benefits.
