Insurance Coverage for Doula Services
Most Southern California families qualify for covered doula care — and most don't know it yet
California expanded insurance coverage for doula services in 2023. Tayna and Ifeanyi built SoCal Doulas around one belief — that every family deserves access to professional support, and most already have the insurance to make it possible.
Why This Matters
Doula care shouldn't only be available to families who can afford to pay out of pocket.
That's not just a talking point for Tayna and Ifeanyi — it's the reason SoCal Doulas exists. When California expanded Medi-Cal doula coverage in 2023, it was one of the most significant shifts in maternal health access this state had ever seen. For the first time, families on Medi-Cal, Kaiser, IEHP, Health Net, and other major plans could access professional doula support — the same kind of support that research shows reduces cesarean rates, improves birth outcomes, and lowers the risk of postpartum depression — without paying anything out of pocket.
Tayna and Ifeanyi built SoCal Doulas to be at the front of that shift. They credentialed with every major plan, built the billing infrastructure, and made it possible for families across Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Orange, and Los Angeles counties to access doula care the way they access any other healthcare benefit — with their insurance card.
If you have one of the plans listed on this page, there's a very good chance your doula care is already covered. The only way to know for sure is to let us check — and that check is completely free.
"We didn't build this agency so doula care could stay exclusive. We built it so every family in Southern California could walk in the door."
Tayna & Ifeanyi Chessman, Co-Founders of SoCal Doulas
What Insurance Typically Covers
Every plan is different and coverage details vary — which is exactly why we verify benefits individually for every family. But for most eligible Southern California members, a covered doula package looks something like this:
What most covered packages include
An initial consultation — typically a 90-minute first meeting to discuss your birth preferences, needs, and care plan
Prenatal and postpartum visits — up to 8 visits used in any combination depending on where you need support most
Continuous labor and birth support — your doula present throughout active labor and delivery, however long it takes
Extended postpartum visits — in-home visits for feeding support, newborn care guidance, and recovery
Coverage up to 12 months postpartum — even if your baby has already arrived, you may still qualify
No claims to file — SoCal Doulas bills your insurance directly so there's no paperwork on your end

Common Questions About Insurance Coverage
Does insurance really cover doula services in California?
Yes — California expanded Medi-Cal doula coverage in 2023 and many major insurance plans now include birth and postpartum doula benefits for eligible members. SoCal Doulas is credentialed with Medi-Cal, Kaiser Permanente, IEHP, Health Net, Blue Shield Promise, Community Health Group, Tricare West, and Carrot Fertility. Most qualifying families pay nothing out of pocket.
How do I find out if my insurance covers a doula?
The easiest way is to submit our free insurance verification form. SoCal Doulas contacts your plan directly, confirms your eligibility and benefit details, and gets back to you within one business day with a plain-language summary of exactly what's covered — before you commit to anything.
Do I need a referral to use my doula benefits?
For most plans we work with — including Kaiser Permanente and Medi-Cal — no referral is required. You can self-refer directly to SoCal Doulas. Some plans may require a recommendation from your OB or midwife after your first visit, which we'll walk you through when we verify your benefits.
My baby has already been born — can I still use my insurance benefits?
Yes — most Medi-Cal-based plans cover doula services for up to 12 months after the end of your pregnancy. If you've recently delivered and haven't yet used your benefit, you may still qualify for covered in-home postpartum visits. Submit your information and we'll confirm your current eligibility.
Does SoCal Doulas handle the billing or do I have to file claims?
We handle everything. SoCal Doulas bills your insurance plan directly — you never have to file a claim, chase a reimbursement, or deal with insurance paperwork. That's part of what Tayna and Ifeanyi built the agency infrastructure to do. You focus on your pregnancy and your baby. We handle the billing.
What does covered doula care actually include?
Coverage varies by plan but typically includes an initial consultation, prenatal and postpartum visits, continuous labor and birth support, and in-home postpartum care. Most covered families receive between 8 and 11 visits total plus labor support. We confirm the exact details for your specific policy when we verify your benefits.
Is the insurance verification really free?
Yes — completely free, with no obligation to book. We check your benefits, send you the results, and leave the decision entirely up to you. Many families verify during pregnancy and then decide whether to move forward based on what's covered. There's no pressure at any point.
Find out if you're covered — in less than two minutes.
