Community Health Group Doula Coverage
CHG covers doula care across San Diego County
Community Health Group members in San Diego County may qualify for covered birth and postpartum doula services through SoCal Doulas — San Diego's locally-rooted nonprofit Medi-Cal plan, serving the community for over 40 years.
CHG Doula Benefit
San Diego's nonprofit health plan — serving the community for over 40 years.
Community Health Group is a locally-based nonprofit health plan that has served Medi-Cal members throughout San Diego County since 1982. Unlike large national insurers, CHG was built specifically for San Diego — understanding its communities, its hospitals, and the families who depend on Medi-Cal for their care. That local rootedness matters. And it's one of the reasons Tayna and Ifeanyi were committed to getting contracted with CHG — because San Diego families deserve the same access to professional doula support as anyone else.
As a Medi-Cal managed care plan, CHG covers doula services under California's doula benefit. If you have CHG and are currently pregnant, or were pregnant within the last 12 months, you may qualify for covered doula services right now. SoCal Doulas is contracted with Community Health Group and serves families throughout San Diego County — from Chula Vista and National City in the South Bay to Oceanside and Carlsbad along the coast.
For questions about your benefit, call CHG Member Services at (800) 224-7766, available Monday through Friday. For behavioral health support including postpartum depression, call CHG's dedicated line at (800) 404-3332.
"CHG was the one that covered our doula in San Diego. We had no idea it was even possible. Our doula came to our home three times after our baby was born and it made all the difference in those first weeks."

Your doula present throughout active labor and delivery at hospitals and birth centers across San Diego County — including UCSD, Sharp, and Scripps facilities.

Who Qualifies

Eligibility Window
Up to 12 Months
Services available throughout pregnancy and for up to 12 months after the end of your pregnancy — including postpartum-only support.
Note on CHG's recommendation requirement: CHG requires a written recommendation from your physician or another licensed practitioner to begin doula services — but this is simple to obtain. Your OB, midwife, or primary care doctor can provide it at any prenatal visit, or the CHG Maternity Case Management team can facilitate it for you at no cost. We guide you through this process as part of getting started.

Common Questions About CHG Doula Coverage
Does CHG require a referral or recommendation to start doula services?
Yes — CHG requires a written recommendation from a physician or other licensed practitioner before doula services can begin. This is different from plans like Kaiser where services are fully self-referred. The recommendation is straightforward to obtain — ask your OB or midwife at your next prenatal appointment, or call CHG Member Services at (800) 224-7766 and ask to be connected with the Maternity Case Management team. They can facilitate the recommendation process for you at no cost.
How do I get a free breast pump through CHG?
Call CHG Member Services at (800) 224-7766 and request a breast pump prescription referral. They will direct you to an approved DME supplier who ships directly to your home. Order in your third trimester so the pump arrives before your baby. If you need a pump more urgently, WIC San Diego at 1-888-942-9675 can provide a loaner pump while your plan order processes.
What postpartum depression resources are available through CHG in San Diego?
CHG covers mental health counseling and postpartum depression treatment through their behavioral health benefit — call (800) 404-3332 for a direct referral. San Diego also has some of the strongest free community PPD resources in Southern California. The Postpartum Health Alliance of San Diego at 619-254-0023 offers free support groups and peer connection at multiple locations throughout the county. The San Diego County Access and Crisis Line at 1-888-724-7240 is available 24/7 for any mental health emergency — no insurance required.
Which San Diego hospitals does SoCal Doulas serve for CHG members?
SoCal Doulas serves CHG members delivering at hospitals and birth centers throughout San Diego County — including UC San Diego Health at La Jolla and Hillcrest, Sharp Memorial, Sharp Mary Birch, Scripps Mercy, Rady Children's, and community hospitals throughout North County, East County, and South Bay. If you are delivering at a specific facility and want to confirm our experience there, reach out and we'll connect you with a doula who knows your hospital well.
Can I use the UCSD Hearts & Hands volunteer doula program alongside my CHG-covered doula?
Yes — and this is a unique San Diego advantage. The UCSD Hearts & Hands program provides free volunteer doulas to any family delivering at UCSD Health, available 24/7 without any insurance requirement. Your CHG-covered SoCal Doulas doula provides your prenatal visits, is your consistent relationship throughout pregnancy, and attends your birth wherever you deliver. If you're at UCSD, the Hearts & Hands volunteer can provide additional in-hospital support. They complement each other rather than compete.
My baby is already born — can I still use my CHG doula benefit?
Yes. Your CHG doula benefit is available for up to 12 months after the end of your pregnancy. If you've recently delivered and haven't yet used any doula services, you may still qualify for covered in-home postpartum visits. Complete our free verification to confirm your current eligibility — even if your baby has already arrived.
