Kaiser now covers doula services for all California members
As of January 2025 Kaiser Permanente extended its doula benefit to all qualifying California commercial members — on top of Medi-Cal coverage that has been available since 2023. No referral required.
One of the most generous doula benefits in Southern California
California's AB 904 legislation required health plans to develop maternal health equity programs addressing racial disparities in maternal outcomes. Kaiser Permanente responded by expanding its doula benefit on January 1, 2025 to include all qualifying California commercial members — joining the Medi-Cal coverage that Kaiser has offered since 2023.
Kaiser doula services are self-referred — no prior authorization, no prescription, and no doctor's approval is required. You simply choose a Kaiser-contracted doula and begin scheduling your visits. SoCal Doulas is a contracted Kaiser Permanente Southern California doula provider.
Doulas must bill Kaiser directly for all services. This means members cannot be charged additional fees or asked to pay out of pocket beyond any plan-specified cost-sharing.
What Kaiser's doula benefit covers
Kaiser's benefit structure is one of the most comprehensive available to Southern California families. Up to 11 total visits plus full labor support — available for the entire postpartum year.

Eight additional visits in any combination of prenatal preparation and in-home postpartum support — used how your family needs them most.
Your doula by your side throughout active labor and vaginal delivery — covered as a separate item from your prenatal and postpartum visits.
Cesarean birth support is also covered — and billed separately from vaginal birth support. Your doula can attend in the OR as hospital policy allows.
Two extended three-hour postpartum visits for in-depth feeding support, newborn care guidance, and emotional recovery check-ins.
Your benefit remains active for up to 12 months after delivery. If your baby has already arrived, you may still qualify for covered postpartum visits.
