IEHP Doula Benefit

The Inland Empire's most-loved health plan covers doulas

Inland Empire Health Plan is the largest Medi-Cal managed care plan in Riverside and San Bernardino counties — serving more Inland Empire residents than any other health plan. In 2025 IEHP was recognized by J.D. Power for outstanding customer experience for phone support, and their commitment to maternal health is a significant part of that story.

IEHP covers doula services for eligible members under California's Medi-Cal doula benefit. If you have IEHP and are currently pregnant — or were pregnant within the last 12 months — you may qualify for professional birth and postpartum doula support right now.

SoCal Doulas is contracted with IEHP and serves families throughout both Riverside and San Bernardino counties. We handle all billing directly with IEHP — you focus on your pregnancy, and we handle the paperwork.

Common Questions

IEHP doula coverage — what Inland Empire families ask

Specific answers for IEHP members in Riverside and San Bernardino County navigating the doula benefit.

How do I contact IEHP's Maternal Health team?
Call IEHP Member Services at 1-800-440-IEHP (4347) and ask for extension 8580 — the dedicated Maternal Health team. They are available Monday through Friday 7am to 7pm and Saturday through Sunday 8am to 5pm. TTY users call 1-800-718-4347. The Maternal Health team can help you understand your doula benefit, coordinate a referral, and connect you with prenatal programs and postpartum resources at no extra cost.
Do I need a referral from my doctor to use my IEHP doula benefit?
No. The California Department of Health Care Services issued a statewide standing recommendation that all Medi-Cal members who are pregnant or were pregnant within the past year benefit from doula services. This standing order fulfills the referral requirement — you do not need a separate written referral from your OB or midwife. SoCal Doulas handles the enrollment documentation as part of starting services with you.
How do I get a free breast pump through IEHP?
Call IEHP Member Services at 1-800-440-4347 and ask to be connected with a breast pump referral. They will direct you to an approved DME supplier in your area who ships directly to your home. Order in your third trimester so the pump arrives before your baby. If you need a pump more urgently, contact WIC at 1-888-942-9675 — they can often provide a loaner pump while your plan order processes.
What postpartum depression support does IEHP provide?
IEHP covers mental health services including postpartum depression screening and treatment. Their case management team provides ongoing support for up to two years after birth — connecting you with counseling, psychiatric medication management, and community support resources. Call the Maternal Health team at ext. 8580 or ask your OB for a mental health referral through IEHP. If you're struggling now and can't wait for an appointment, Postpartum Support International's free helpline is available daily at 1-800-944-4773.
My baby has already been born — can I still use my IEHP doula benefit?
Yes — if you have IEHP and delivered within the past 12 months, you may still be eligible for covered postpartum doula visits. IEHP's Postpartum Care Extension Program keeps your Medi-Cal coverage active for a full year after birth regardless of income changes. This is one of the most underused parts of the benefit. Complete our free verification to confirm your current eligibility — even if your baby has already arrived.
Does IEHP cover doula services for a VBAC birth?
Yes. IEHP's doula benefit applies regardless of birth type, including families planning a vaginal birth after cesarean. VBAC births particularly benefit from doula support — the additional emotional preparation, confidence-building, and steady labor presence a doula provides can make a meaningful difference in how families navigate the unique emotional weight a VBAC carries. SoCal Doulas has extensive experience supporting VBAC families throughout the Inland Empire.
