Health Net covers doula services in California
Health Net Medi-Cal and commercial members may qualify for covered birth and postpartum doula support — with a choice between an individual doula and a full digital maternity platform.
Two ways to access your doula benefit — your choice
Health Net is unique among California insurers in how they've structured the doula benefit. Rather than offering only one path, Health Net gives eligible members a choice: work with an individual in-person doula like SoCal Doulas, or enroll in Mahmee — a digital maternity support platform that includes a wrap-around team of doulas, registered nurses, lactation consultants, mental health coaches, and nutrition coaches available through an app.
Both options are free to eligible members. The important thing to know is that you choose one — they cannot be combined. If in-person birth support and postpartum home visits are important to you, SoCal Doulas is the right choice. If you'd prefer ongoing virtual support across the whole pregnancy, Mahmee may fit better.
Health Net extended doula coverage to commercial plan members on January 1, 2025 under California's AB 904 legislation — meaning both Medi-Cal and many Health Net commercial members are now eligible. Member Services is available 24 hours a day at 1-800-675-6110 (TTY: 711).
Individual doula or Mahmee — understanding the difference
Health Net offers both paths at no additional cost to eligible members. Read through both before deciding — and remember, you choose one. They cannot be used together.
Your doula attends your actual labor and birth. She comes to your home for prenatal visits and postpartum check-ins, provides hands-on physical support during contractions, and is a consistent face you've built a relationship with from early pregnancy through the fourth trimester.
Best for families who want in-person presence at their birth, hands-on labor support, and postpartum home visits with real newborn care guidance.
Mahmee provides virtual doula visits through an app, group classes, 24/7 direct messaging, and a team of nurses, lactation consultants, mental health coaches, and nutrition coaches. In-person visits are available in select counties based on availability.
Best for families who prefer ongoing digital support throughout the whole pregnancy and aren't as focused on having a doula physically present at birth.
What the individual doula benefit covers
If you choose SoCal Doulas as your individual Health Net doula, here is exactly what your covered benefit includes. All services are billed directly to Health Net — you do not pay us out of pocket beyond any plan-specified cost sharing.
SoCal Doulas handles all Health Net billing and documentation. From your first prenatal visit through your last postpartum check-in, the administrative side is entirely ours to manage.Verify My Benefits

SoCal Doulas serves Health Net members throughout Southern California — from the Inland Empire and High Desert to San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles. Because our doulas accept a limited number of clients each month, we encourage families to verify their benefits and reach out early in pregnancy to secure their doula.
"Health Net's two-path approach gives families a real choice. We are proud to be the in-person option — the one that shows up at your birth, comes to your home, and stays with you through the whole journey."
