Health Net Doula Benefit

Two ways to access your doula benefit — and you choose which one.

Health Net is unique among California insurers in how they've structured the doula benefit. Rather than offering only one path, Health Net gives eligible members a real choice: work with an individual in-person doula like SoCal Doulas, or enroll in Mahmee — a digital maternity support platform with a team of doulas, registered nurses, lactation consultants, mental health coaches, and nutrition coaches available through an app.

Both options are free to eligible members. The important thing to know is that you choose one — they cannot be combined. Tayna and Ifeanyi want every Health Net family to understand this choice before enrolling so you get the support that's actually right for you, not just the one you happened to click first.

Health Net extended doula coverage to commercial plan members on January 1, 2025 under California's AB 904 legislation — meaning both Medi-Cal and many Health Net commercial members are now eligible. Member Services is available 24 hours a day at 1-800-675-6110.

Individual Doula or Mahmee — Understanding the Difference

Read through both options before deciding. Once you enroll with one, you cannot switch to the other.

Option A — In Person

Individual Doula with SoCal Doulas

Your doula attends your actual labor and birth. She comes to your home for prenatal visits and postpartum check-ins, provides hands-on physical support during contractions, and is a consistent face you've built a relationship with from early pregnancy through the fourth trimester.

Best for families who want in-person presence at their birth, hands-on labor support, and postpartum home visits with real newborn care guidance. This is what SoCal Doulas provides — we bill Health Net directly.

Option B — Digital

Mahmee Virtual Maternity Platform

Mahmee provides virtual doula visits through an app, group classes, 24/7 direct messaging, and a team of nurses, lactation consultants, mental health coaches, and nutrition coaches. In-person visits available in select counties based on availability.

Best for families who prefer ongoing digital support throughout pregnancy and aren't focused on having a doula physically present at birth. Contact Mahmee at 1-818-431-1118 or mahmee.com to enroll.

Important — you cannot use both: Health Net Medi-Cal members may receive individual doula services or Mahmee virtual services — but not both. Once you enroll with one, you cannot switch to the other. If you are unsure which is right for your family, call Health Net Member Services at 1-800-675-6110 before enrolling, or reach out to us and we'll help you think through it.

What the Individual Doula Benefit Covers

Common Questions About Health Net Doula Coverage

What is the real difference between SoCal Doulas and Mahmee?

SoCal Doulas is an individual in-person doula — she attends your actual labor, comes to your home for prenatal visits, and provides hands-on physical and emotional support throughout your pregnancy and postpartum period. She is a consistent person you build a relationship with. Mahmee is a digital-first platform with virtual visits, group classes, and a team of doulas, nurses, and coaches available through an app — with in-person visits in select counties based on availability. Both are free to eligible members, but you choose one and cannot combine them.

I have a Health Net commercial plan — do I qualify for doula coverage?

Health Net extended doula coverage to commercial plan members on January 1, 2025 under California's AB 904 legislation. Eligibility depends on your specific plan type. Complete our free verification form or call Health Net Member Services at 1-800-675-6110 (available 24/7) to confirm whether your commercial plan includes the doula benefit and what, if any, cost-sharing applies.

How do I get my free breast pump through Health Net?

Call the Member Services number on the back of your Health Net member ID card and ask for a breast pump referral. They will connect you with an approved DME supplier who ships directly to your home. Order in your third trimester. If you need a pump sooner, WIC at 1-888-942-9675 can often provide a loaner pump while your plan order processes.

What if I'm struggling with postpartum depression?

Health Net covers behavioral health services including postpartum depression screening and treatment. Call the Member Services number on the back of your ID card and ask for a behavioral health referral to an in-network therapist or psychiatrist. You don't need to wait until your next OB appointment to get help. Postpartum Support International also offers a free peer helpline at 1-800-944-4773 — available every day of the week — as a first point of contact while you navigate your referral.

Can I use my doula benefit if my baby has already been born?

Yes — Health Net's doula benefit is available for up to 12 months after the end of your pregnancy. If you've recently delivered and haven't yet used your benefit, you may still qualify for covered postpartum doula visits. Complete our free verification to confirm your current eligibility even if your baby has already arrived.

Does Health Net cover doula support for a VBAC birth?

Yes. Health Net's doula benefit applies to all birth types — including families planning a vaginal birth after cesarean. VBAC births particularly benefit from the emotional preparation, confidence-building, and continuous labor presence a doula provides. SoCal Doulas has extensive experience supporting VBAC families throughout Southern California across all five counties.
