Newborn Care Classes

They say babies don't come with a manual. We disagree.

Here's the truth about those first hours at home with a newborn: the families who feel calm are not the ones who read the most books or watched the most YouTube videos. They're the ones who practiced. Who held a demonstration baby and changed a diaper and learned to swaddle and actually heard their partner try — and fail — and try again, until it clicked. That muscle memory doesn't come from knowing. It comes from doing.

At SoCal Doulas, our newborn care classes are taught by experienced doulas who have spent countless hours with new families in real homes, not just classrooms. Our approach is practical, hands-on, evidence-based, and completely judgment-free. Every feeding choice, every parenting style, every family structure is welcomed. You learn what you actually need — practiced, not just explained — so that when your baby is finally in your arms, your hands already know what to do.

"Every parent deserves to hold their baby for the first time knowing — really knowing — that they can do this. That's what this class gives you."

What You'll Learn and Practice

Every skill in our class is practiced hands-on with a demonstration baby — not just observed while someone else demonstrates. Here's what's covered across all six modules:

What is normal — and what to watch for in the first days

Reading hunger, sleep, and comfort cues before they escalate to crying

Newborn reflexes and what they mean

Skin-to-skin benefits and bonding in the early hours

When to call your provider — signs that genuinely need attention

Module 2

Diapering & Cord Care

Diaper changes practiced hands-on — cloth and disposable options

Umbilical cord stump care and what healing looks like

Diaper rash — prevention, treatment, and when to escalate

What normal newborn output looks like — color, frequency, consistency

Multiple swaddle techniques practiced on a demonstration baby

When swaddling helps — and when to transition out of it

Realistic newborn sleep expectations — cycles, wake windows, and why

Module 4

Feeding Your Newborn

Breastfeeding basics — latch, positioning, supply, and early challenges

Bottle feeding with paced feeding technique and correct flow rate

Formula preparation and safe storage

Pumping — when to start, how to build supply, equipment basics

Combination feeding without compromising supply

Module 5

Soothing & Calming Techniques

Babywearing basics — carriers, wraps, and safe positioning

Partner and support person roles in soothing — sharing the load

What to do when nothing works — and why that's completely normal

Module 6

Bathing, Skin & Newborn Health

Sponge baths before the cord falls off — technique practiced step by step

First full bath — what to prepare and how to make it calm

Newborn skin — what's normal, what to use, and what to avoid

Baby acne, dry skin, cradle cap, jaundice, and common concerns

Temperature taking and well-baby signs to know

Group Class or Private — Choose What Works for You

Most Popular

Saturday Group Class

Our group newborn care class runs every Saturday morning as a single 3-hour session covering all six modules. Class sizes are kept intentionally small so every family gets hands-on practice time and real questions answered.

The group setting offers something unique — you hear questions from other families you didn't think to ask, and you often leave with a sense of community that extends well beyond the class itself. Partners and support people are fully included at no extra cost.

More Personalized

Private In-Home or Virtual Class

For families who prefer a one-on-one experience, we offer private newborn care classes in the comfort of your own home — or virtually via video call. Private classes are customized entirely around your specific needs, questions, and parenting plans.

Especially well-suited for families expecting multiples, those with a difficult previous postpartum experience, families with mobility considerations, or anyone who simply learns better without a group setting. Contact us for scheduling and pricing.

Common Questions About Newborn Care Classes

When in pregnancy should I take a newborn care class?

We recommend between 32 and 38 weeks pregnant. This gives you enough time before your due date while keeping the material fresh when your baby actually arrives. That said, we welcome families at any point in pregnancy — and even families who have already delivered and want hands-on guidance in those first weeks.

Does my partner need to come?

We genuinely encourage it — not just allow it. Caring for a newborn is a shared experience, and when both caregivers practice the skills together in class, it builds real teamwork before the baby arrives. Partner participation is included in the class tuition at no additional cost. Grandparents and other close caregivers who will be spending significant time with your baby are also welcome.

Is this class only for first-time parents?

Not at all. Many families take a newborn care class with their second or third baby, especially if there has been a significant gap between children or if the previous postpartum experience was particularly challenging. Evidence-based newborn care guidelines also evolve — what was recommended five or ten years ago may have changed. A refresher is always worthwhile.

Can I take this class if I'm planning to breastfeed?

Yes — feeding is covered in depth in Module 4, including breastfeeding basics, latch and positioning, building supply, and where to turn if breastfeeding feels difficult. We cover all feeding methods equally and without bias. If you want more in-depth lactation support beyond what a newborn care class provides, we can connect you with a lactation consultant.

What if I can't make it to a group class?

We offer private newborn care classes for families who prefer a one-on-one setting, have scheduling constraints, or simply learn better without a group environment. Private classes can be held in your home or virtually and are customized around your specific needs. Contact us to discuss availability and pricing for a private session.

Is this class covered by insurance?

Newborn care classes may be covered under California's doula benefit through Medi-Cal and select managed care plans. Coverage varies by provider and policy. We recommend completing our free insurance verification before enrolling so you know exactly what your plan covers — no surprises before you commit.
